What happens when someone gets hit by a train?
Who responds to the accident?
How long may it take to complete the investigation before the train moves?
How does this affect rail traffic across the system?
Is the response of the train engineer similar in other countries?
What happens after a train hits someone? Just like a car, the train has to come to a complete stop. In this video, you can see that the train took a long time to stop. Since the train was so long, it took almost the whole train length to stop. As a result of having to stop and investigate the fatality, the rail traffic was held up and the train was ultimately moved to continue the investigation.
The United States is not the only place to have people who ignore train rules. It happens in Australia. The emotional trauma the engineers feel is the same trauma felt here in the United States. All they can do is apply the brakes on the train and hope cars, pedestrians or trespassers clear the track. It can be tough for some to get behind the controls again. Some don't and some do. They may also become secondary victims of the accident themselves.
The same video from the Hazards section showing the 4 Russian boys killed by a train is shown again.
