Inspired by the first book Jumpstart to Literacy book, The Little Engine That Could, we wanted to make sure we continued to provide young readers of Barrington with an activity that celebrated reading and was physically distant (due to COVID-19 precautions), so we started doing StoryWalks! We hope the families enjoyed time outside and, most importantly, reading with their little ones.
It's enjoying the outdoors and children’s literature at the same time! Stroll through the wooded path and read a great children’s story along the way,
On October 25, 2020 the we hosted our first Storywalk with the Barrington Early Childhood Learning Center. It was held on the path behind the field at Barrington Elementary School. Families pre-registered (to maintain social distancing) to simultaneously enjoy the outdoors and children’s literature. They strolled down the 0.2 mile wooded path and read We're Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen, illustrated by Helen Oxenbury. Each family received a copy of the book for their home library at the end of the walk.
After the success of the first storywalk, we did another! This time it was a bitter cold day in January 2021. Jan Brett's The Mitten was the story and the walk was at the ECLC’s new OWL (Outdoor & Woodland Learning) Nest! Children picked up a craft to take home at the end of the walk.
On Sunday, October 17, 2021, we held our 18th Jumpstart to Literacy Event, another story walk! It was co-sponsored with the Barrington Early Childhood Learning Center (ECLC). Families strolled through the ECLC’s OWL’s (Outdoor & Woodland Learning) Nest, tried to spot fifteen scarecrows along the way, and read the story There Was An Old Woman Who Swallowed Some Leaves by Lucille Colandro. At the end of the walk each family received a copy of the book, which was presented by Nurse Dee Swain (the recipient of the BSF Excellence in Education Award 2020-021). Twenty nine families participated (101 people, including 53 children).
On Sunday, October 16, 2022, we held our 19th Jumpstart to Literacy Event, another story walk! It was co-sponsored with the Barrington Early Childhood Learning Center (ECLC). Families strolled through the ECLC’s OWL’s (Outdoor & Woodland Learning) Nest and read the story Inch By Inch by Leo Leoni (kiddos tried to find a hidden caterpillar at the end). Each family received a copy of the book and a handout with extension activities which was presented by Jeff Durrell (the recipient of the BSF Excellence in Education Award 2021-22). Twenty nine families participated (104 people, including 55 children and 49 adults). The story walk was also used at the Barrington Elementary School the following week for the elementary students to enjoy.
Click Clack Moo: Cows That Type
Sunday, Oct 15, 2023 was the Jumpstart to Literacy's StoryWalk and it was a blast! Once again the ECLC co-sponsored this fun event. Over 100 people (51 kiddos and their grown ups) came to enjoy Click Clack Moo: Cows That Type (by Doreen Cronin, illustrated by Betsy Lewin) and the beautiful walk through the ECLC's OWL's nest. Kiddos tried out some typewriters too! Recipients of the Excellence In Education Award came to hand out copies of the book to each family as well. It was such a wonderful day. THANK YOU to everyone who came and helped make it happen.
The story walk stayed at the ECLC for all the kindergarten and PreK classes to enjoy. It was also used at the Barrington Elementary School the following week for the elementary students to enjoy.
