Students currently studying abroad in a program for which they are paying Barnard tuition (and who were eligible for the Room Selection process before they left) must take part in the 2026 Room Selection process remotely to secure housing for next academic year.
Students must submit the Intent Form and sign a Housing Agreement. Failure to register and participate in the Room Selection process will lead to loss of guaranteed housing.
Note: students who take a leave of absence during their study abroad program will not be able to take part in the Room Selection process and/or their Fall room assignment will be cancelled. Students may reapply for campus housing when requesting to return from their leave of absence.
Students who are not eligible for Room Selection may submit a Housing Application to be on the non-Guaranteed Waitlist (starting in mid-March).
Eligible students who might study abroad for the Fall (or full academic year) are required to submit the Intent Form.
If Accepted: If you have already been accepted into your program, you can indicate that you are going abroad on the Intent Form (and will not take part in the Housing Lottery).
If Unsure: If you are not 100% sure that you are going abroad, you should take part in the Housing Lottery (or another Intent Form category) to secure a backup room assignment.
If you have a room assignment (or sign up for the Guaranteed List) and then finalize plans to study abroad, you must submit the Housing Cancellation Form by May 7, 2026.
Extensions are available for students still waiting for acceptance into their programs.
No. If you pick a room and then cancel it to study abroad, it is not possible to "hold" that space for the Spring. The space will be assigned to a different student over the summer for the academic year. You will apply for a new assignment for the Spring semester (see below).
Students abroad for the Fall will be emailed in mid-to-late September regarding the Spring Housing Application. Students who were eligible for the Room Selection process are guaranteed Spring housing when returning from a Fall study abroad program as long as they apply before the deadline below.
Deadline: The application deadline is November 1, 2026.
Assignments: Students provide ranked preferences and are assigned to available rooms in early January.
Accommodations: Students requiring housing accommodations must submit a CARDS request by November 1.
Students who plan to study abroad in the Spring should participate in the current Room Selection process as usual to secure a room assignment for the Fall 2026 semester.
Cancellation: After finalizing plans to study abroad (starting in late October), students must submit the Housing Cancellation Form by December 1, 2026, to cancel the Spring portion of their academic-year long housing agreement.
Cancellation extensions are available for students still waiting for acceptance into their programs.
Housing For Fall 2027: Students eligible for Room Selection immediately before going abroad will be able to register remotely while abroad to take part in the next year's process (as long as they don't take a leave of absence while abroad).
