The Smith-Hughes Act of 1917 established vocational education in the public school system throughout the country, including agriculture education. The act, written by Hoke Smith & Dudley Hughes laid the foundation for advancements in our society through educating our youth on modern technology and best practices. Hoke Smith was also responsible for the Smith-Lever Act of 1914 which established the Cooperative Extension Service throughout the nation.
It is interesting to note that Hoke Smith, who helped to write these two important pieces of legislation, was born in the city of Newton in Catawba County, North Carolina. The site of his historical plaque lays between Highway 10 and the "Old Hospital" which currently houses the Catawba County branch of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service.
The Bandys School FFA Chapter has proudly served the Bandys Community since it was chartered on Nov. 23, 1954 . The program began once the high school was completed. The chapter encompassed the old Balls Creek Chapter (pictured to the right) which was the 8th chapter to be chartered in the state, and the Sherrills Ford FFA Chapter. In 1965, members of the Catawba Rosenwald Chapter of the New Farmers of America merged into the Bandys FFA Chapter. Over the years, the chapter has had a rich tradition of fully living out the FFA Mission of developing premier leadership, personal growth and career success through activities provided by the chapter.
The Bandys FFA Chapter was the 546th Chapter to be chartered by the Young Tar Heel Association of the Future Farmers of America, which later became the North Carolina FFA Association.
From 1935-1965 the New Farmers of America served African American students during segregation. The purpose of the NFA was to encourage and guide boys in the selection of the occupation of farming and become established in farming and to develop rural leadership encourage thrift, scholarship, cooperation and citizenship in its members. Established in 1939, the Catawba-Rosenwald NFA Chapter quickly became known nationally for their works. When NFA & FFA merged in 1965, members were absorbed into the Bandys and Bunker Hill FFA Chapters.
