Balmain Referees Association instituted the Sean Hampstead Medal for the Referee?s Referee of the Year in 2007. The awarding of this medal is to provide recognition to the active member who has acted as a role model for other active members during the year. Sean Hampstead joined the Balmain Referees Association in 1984 and was graded in 1990. At the time the Sean Hampstead Medal was struck, Sean was the "most capped" NRL referee to come from the Balmain District, having refereed more than 270 games during his grade career including State of Origin and Test Matches with great distinction. Despite the constant demands on his time, Sean has always been available to our Association and its members for advice, support and guidance for any young up and coming Balmain referees trying to emulate Sean's achievements.
