The World Table Tennis Championships, referred to as the "World Table Tennis Championships", is one of the table tennis events hosted by the International Table Tennis Federation. Each competition is hosted by the table tennis association authorized by the International Table Tennis Federation and has wide influence.
The World Table Tennis Championships consists of seven events including men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles, mixed doubles, and men's and women's teams. The first session was held in London, England, in December 1926. It has been held every two years since the 25th session in 1959. It is the highest level world table tennis competition hosted by the International Table Tennis Federation and has wide influence. It is known as the "three major table tennis events" together with the Table Tennis World Cup and the Olympic Games.
Starting from 2003, the ITTF holds individual and team table tennis competitions separately, with individual events in odd-numbered years and team events in even-numbered years. This decision was made after the 1999 World Table Tennis Championships, which had to be split due to the Kosovo War, with individual events held in Eindhoven, Netherlands, and team events postponed to February 2000 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The World Table Tennis Championships began in 1926. The first "World Table Tennis Championships" was held in London, England. The powerful Hungarian team won all five championships in the men's team, men's singles, men's doubles, women's singles and mixed doubles championships.
The second World Table Tennis Championships held in 1928 added a women's doubles competition, and the Eighth World Table Tennis Championships held in 1933 added a women's team competition. The World Table Tennis Championships were held annually from 1928 to 1939 and from 1947 to 1957, during which time they were suspended due to World War II. Since 1957, the "World Table Tennis Championships" has been held every two years. There are seven events: men's team, women's team, men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles.
In 1926, an international table tennis competition was held in Berlin, Germany, where the idea of establishing the European Table Tennis Championships (later the World Table Tennis Championships) and the ITTF was proposed. The world championships have gone through several stages of development, including the heyday of European table tennis, the rise of the Japanese team, the emergence of the Chinese and North Korean teams, the resurgence of the European team, and the dominance of the Chinese team. The 2020 World Table Tennis Team Championship was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
