Badminton, originally known as Poona or Poonah, was popularized in the garrison town of Poona, where the first rules were drawn up in 1873. The sport was played with sides ranging from 1 to 4 players, but games between two or four competitors worked best. The Badminton Association of England (BAE) published revised rules in 1893 and launched the sport officially in Portsmouth in 1893. The BAE started the first badminton competition, the All England Open Badminton Championships, in 1899. The International Badminton Federation was founded in 1934, with England, Scotland, Wales, Canada, Denmark, France, Ireland, the Netherlands, and New Zealand as founding members. Asian nations have become dominant in international competition, with China being the greatest force recently. The game has also become a popular backyard sport in the United States.
