The competent teacher is an ethical and reflective practitioner who exhibits professionalism; provides leadership in the learning community; and advocates for students, parents or guardians, and the profession.
Danielson Framework Goals for Student Teaching
At the start of student teaching I was required to set goals to go professionally as a teacher. This follows the knowledge indicator 9D “identifies paths for continuous professional growth and improvement, including the design of a professional growth plan” (IL knowledge indicator 9D). Setting goals is something teachers have to do for their students all the time, why not hold them to do that as well.
Everyone is always learning new things and teachers especially need to stay sharp and set goals to be better. I set and met all of my goals while I was a student teaching at Heather Hill. That is part of the performance indicator 9K “reflects on professional practice and resulting outcomes; engages in self-assessment; and adjusts practices to improve student performance, school goals, and professional growth” (IL performance indicator 9K). I had to review and reflect on my teaching practices a lot as I taught more and more. Reflecting on teaching can help teachers find what went well and what to change for the next lesson. Reflecting and goal setting benefits teachers as they find their pedagogical ways.
Mandated Reporter Training
All people who work in schools with students are considered to be Mandated Reporters. Mandated Reporters are people who need to report child abuse or neglect if they see it. Being a Mandated Reporter is apart of knowledge indicator 9B “knows laws and rules (e.g., mandatory reporting, sexual misconduct, corporal punishment) as a foundation for the fair and just treatment of all students and their families in the classroom and school” (IL knowledge indicator 9B). Being a Mandated Reporter is a part of being a good teacher, who promises to work to keep students safe and cared for in the community.
Being a Mandated Reporter means having to recognize abuse, neglect and sexual abuse that children may be going through. Recognizing when to call child services is following performance indicator 9R “is aware of and complies with the mandatory reporter provisions of Section 4 of the Abused and Neglected Child Reporting Act [325 ILCS 5/4]” (IL performance indicator 9R). Having awareness of abuse can help students feel safe and stay safe at home or school. Good teachers show their care for students enough to help them when they need it. I plan to be caring and aware of abuse to help prevent a child from living in a harmful environment.
