Classroom Layout
At my placement for student teaching in 4th grade my cooperating teacher had the desks in pairs. When I asked her why, she explained that it gives them an instant partner and someone to ask questions to, but eliminates the chattiness of tables. In the picture you can also see my table which has 4 chairs and sometimes 5. I used my area as both a desk for me; but also a small group table, where I welcomed students to work. Seating students in pairs wasn’t always easy because they would get on each other's nerves as human beings do or become chatty. Part of my role as teacher was explaining how to be a good seat partner and help your neighbors. That is what knowledge indicator 4C states “understands how to help students work cooperatively and productively in groups” (IL knowledge indicator 4C). Explaining to my students about being a good seat partner means setting the expectations early on and reviewing them to students when they need it.
These expectations need to be clear and modeled for students. Being a good seat partner means; not leaving a mess, not talking when the other is, and being respectful. This follows performance indicator 4J “creates clear expectations and procedures for communication and behavior and a physical setting conducive to achieving classroom goals'' (IL performance indicator 4J). Having clear expectations for everything and reviewing them helps students be on their best behavior and things run smoothly in the classroom.
The 4 questions: Capturing Kids Hearts
During student teaching my biggest area of growth was classroom management because I didn’t have to do it as much as a novice student teacher. I was able to use a lot of new things to help me manage the classroom and deal with behaviors that occurred. The main thing I used was The 4 questions from Capturing Kids Hearts. These questions helped to redirect students to do the right things and refocus. That follows knowledge indicator 4A which states “understands principles of and strategies for effective classroom and behavior management” (IL knowledge indicator 4A). Using the 4 questions has helped me to find ways to refocus students to a targeted behavior or activity.
Using the 4 questions has also helped students be mindful about their behavior in my classroom. Being mindful and thoughtful about actions helps students to see how their behaviors affect others. This follows the performance indicator 4K, which reads “uses strategies to create a smoothly functioning learning community in which students assume responsibility for themselves and one another, participate in decision-making, work collaboratively and independently, use appropriate technology, and engage in purposeful learning activities” (IL performance indicator 4K). My goal as the teacher is to have clear expectations and consequences for students' behavior. I want my students to be mindful of their actions and how the people, places, and learning and themselves are affected because of their actions.
