Participating in giving out School PBIS "Money"
During student teaching I participated in handing out school money "Hive tickets" to students for being in task, following expectations and being kind. This was a fun reward system that students enjoyed. It helped me as a teacher have an instant reward for following expectations.
Solar Eclipse Fun
On April 8th, 2024 a big chunk of the US could see the total solar eclipse a phenomenon that won't happen again for another 20 years. My school all went outside to view it safely wearing protective glasses. With the help of my teacher we explained what an eclipse is and why this total eclipse is special. Students were told to keep glasses on to stay safe from the harmful light. I brought a colander to reflect the crescent shape on the ground to safely view the eclipse. It was a blast and students learned a lot in this unforgettable experience.
Making Equvalent Fraction Posters in Math
In Math my students practiced making equivalent fraction by multiplying both the top and bottom numbers in a fraction (the numerator and dominator). Then once students had 2 equivalent fractions they shaded in to show how they are equal. We made these into posters and displayed them to help students learn ways to make equivalent fractions.
Teaching Energy Transfers Twice
During student teaching my first unit I taught was science on energy transfers where student learned about the 6 forms of energy:
Gravitational
Sound
Motion
Light
Electrical
Chemical
This unit was a lot of terms of definitions to define what energy transfer was what. But ended with students making a invention that used all the transfers in a chain reaction to work. I was able to go through this unit with my 4th grade class and the other 4th grade asked me to help. I got to teach this unit twice in the same year; which was fun and allowed me to rework things from the first go to be better for the second. Overall a great experience.
Teaching Online
During student teaching Chicagoland had a very cold winter which prompted a few online learning days. I learned how to manage a classroom on zoom, talk to students and still reach the learning goals of the day. Over the experience was a lot at first be helped me connect and teach students in a another environment. Note that says Hi Ms. Sheridan (Me) :)
White board Wordle
At the end of the day I helped with bus duty in my classroom; where students where bored and had to wait to be called to the gym. Inspired by another teacher I saw online, I invented "white board Wordle". Together for 10 minutes at the end of the day students and I played wordle. I choose the word to make sure it was school appropriate. Students had 6 guesses to a 5 letter word, if a letter was in the word in the correct spot, I circled it. If it was in the word but not in the right spot I put a star above in. If a letter was not in the word I striked through it. The goal was to guess the word was as many letter correct as possible. This was a fun way to end to day and get to know students. Everyone really enjoyed it and would ask to play as soon as the bell rung.
Light Bulb Lab
During student teaching I also taught the last science unit of the year, electricity. Students where tasked with lighting a light bulb with; 2 wires, a bulb holder, and a battery. Many where successful and everyone learned what a closed circuit. Students also discovered how electricity moves in a loop. This was a fun, interactive, and hands on unit that helped students connect electricity to the real world. I really enjoyed teaching the labs because of the looks on students faces when had the "light bulb moment".
A student brought a Spider to class to show me!
On my last day a student brought his "pet" wolf spider he caught in his yard to show me. Here I am holding it, in the container of dole whip, with my students around me. This was probably one of my favorite moments student teaching, because it shows that, that boy knows I care about him and his hobbies. Having my students know I care and support them is important me as a teacher. I was so pleased that he bought it and that other students could learn about it from him. This was a proud teacher moment for me, but also gave my student a boost of in his elf esteem which he needed. Very funny and sweet moment for my last day.
