Per the CSU Background Check Policy, current employees who are under voluntary consideration for positions in which a background check is required by law, or who are under voluntary consideration for positions that the CSU has designated as sensitive are required to undergo a background check (including criminal records check). The CSU system-wide policy on background checks was developed to provide directives and guidance on background checks which are critical in preventing risk and providing protection to campus employees, students, volunteers, and guests. CSU Background Check Policy Statement: The California State University (CSU) is committed to protecting the health, well-being, and safety of its employees (including student workers), students, volunteers and guests. For the purposes of this policy, current CSU employees are required to undergo background checks if under voluntary consideration for a position in which a background check is required by law or for a sensitive position (with limited exceptions).

In addition, background checks are required for all individuals (new hires, current employees, volunteers, consultants, employees of auxiliaries, outside entities and independent contractors) who perform work involving regular or direct contact with minor children, including at CSU-hosted recreational camps (e.g. youth activities).

Consultants, independent contractors, and employees of auxiliaries or outside entities must undergo background checks if required by law or if they work they will be performing meets the CSU definition of sensitive. Every employee voluntarily moving into a position in which a background check is required must complete it unless they have had a CSU background check at the same campus in the past 12 months. A background check (including a criminal records check and fingerprinting) must be satisfactorily completed before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU. Students are responsible for initiating the background check by going to the ADB web site to register, pay and authorize release to CSU OT Department.
