In 2019, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) reported that 21.3 million Americans lack access to broadband availability. 1.3 million are in Arizona. It’s abundantly clear that there are extensive and persistent divides in the state between those who can easily access the internet and those who cannot.

Distance Learning has amplified the gap that perpetuates inequity in education. This report illustrates that the digital divide is a persistent problem across all 50 states, with a reported 9 million students lacking both adequate internet and devices.

  • 29% of K-12 students (335,558 students) lack adequate access to the internet. 19% of students do not have devices at home needed for distance learning.

  • 56% of the students who lack adequate access to the internet are Black, Latinx, or Native American.

  • 10% of teachers lack adequate access to the internet and 3% of teachers do not have devices at home needed for distance learning.
