The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center was established in 1982 by Lady Bird Johnson and Helen Hayes. It was later renamed in 1997 to honor Lady Bird Johnson’s legacy of conservation and ecological work. The Center has expanded from a minor non-profit focusing only on Texas’ wildflowers, to a significant part of the University of Texas at Austin’s plant conservation research for plants all across North America. The center hosts almost 900 different kinds of native plants from all across Texas and even includes a pollinator habitat garden, theme gardens, and examples of sustainable architecture. The LBJ Wildflower Center is open for visits from 9 am to 5 pm and even has educational programs for young children.
