Bastion to Horseshoe Island. On water at 9:20 am. Stopped for day at 3 pm.
Up at 9, stuffed tent in the bag, skipped breakfast and coffee and jumped on the water. We had to paddle about 20 minutes before the cloud of mosquitos we brought with us dispersed enough that we could stop and finish off those we could lay a hand on. At this point we could stop for snacks that we had in our life preservers.
Paddled up mainland side of Bastion. No camp sites, mainly cliffs. Stopped on a small island off Bastion's north end for breakfast and coffee. Nice spot with moderate winds and a beautiful view of Bastion and other islands. Could be a good campsite but finding a spot for a tent would take some work.
Took an easy paddle day. Hung out in the waters off Janis Point because it is the best view of the glacier while on the water. Water was spectacular blue and calm. First and last good spot to enjoy this view. It was disappointing to lose this view even if the view towards the north is also spectacular.
Paddled around the islands off Janis for fun, weaving in and out of the islands. There were a couple of camping spots in the islands. Spotted an eagle and its nest in the tree tops.
Stopped for the night at Horseshoe Island at 3pm. No bugs, really hot. Lots of birds, several species. Relaxed in the sun. A motorboat group was camped out of sight on another spit across a channel from us. As we were relaxing, reading, and writing the day's notes, a young dog with a big bell broke into our tent to cuddle. So cute.
