During the 2020-21 school year I worked under a grant to bring computer science standards into classrooms across Virginia. I worked with a group of four other teachers to craft lesson plans that could be used by teachers across the state. Our goal was to design classroom curriculum that tied various contents to the state's computer science standards.
While we worked on two projects (Theatre arts and 8th Grade Science) I will be sharing my lesson for a middle school theatre classroom.
We first unpacked the standards for both theatre and computer science.
Then I developed how those standards would be applied in the classroom. When students are learning about blocking (moving on stage) there is specific jargon. To review this jargon, students would plan out a series of movements and then apply them with on a virtual stage.
Using the online program Scratch, students could apply the theatre concepts while developing their coding abilities for computer science.
Once I had finished developing this curriculum I tested in out in my own classroom. I was able to see what worked and what adjustments would need to be completed before others could use this. Once my work was completed, I submitted my work to the grant leaders.
