Best practices in instructional supervision encompass these main elements: collaboration, communication, reflection, and support.
I was trained by Virginia Commonwealth University's Center for Teacher Leadership in the Clinical Faculty Program. In this program, I spent a year learning about the observation process, how to encourage reflective learning, and how to give meaningful observation feedback that leads to improvement. I have continuously relied used training while coaching teachers in incorporating reading strategies into their instruction and leading professional development activities with new teachers.
I believe in open, honest, and clear communication. I encourage teachers to reflect on and grow from the good and the bad. It was a great lesson, what was great about it? If it was a bad lesson, what went wrong?
Like students, we all learn best when learning is meaningful, when we are involved in the process, and when we are reflective during and after the process. Teachers want to (and should) feel encouraged, empowered, and supported by administrators.
