-James Kouzes & Barry Posner, The Leadership Challenge
Me (left) with a former Instructional Coach. We worked collaboratively to coach new teachers and provide differentiated instruction to struggling readers.
Me (far left) with students who went to our feeder schools to participate in National Read Across America Day. This will always be a highlight for me because I had to work with community partners, feeder school leaders, staff, and administration to plan and organize this field trip.
Literacy initiatives are a big deal for me! I work collaboratively with staff and community resources to put together at least 2 big literacy events each school year. At each event, we give away FREE books to students, teachers, parents, and community members. To date, we have given away over 2,500 books!
Waving goodbye to students at bus duty on the last day of school!
In 2017, our leadership team held a retreat off campus. We went on a boat ride through the canal in Shockoe Bottom in RIchmond, Virginia.
Dr. Wilson, former Director of High School Edcation, tweeted a picture of me (right) monitoring campus with a colleague on the first day of school.
I have spent five years in reading intervention. These are some of my students who graduted in 2019!
The first day of New Teacher Academy 2017 just happened to be the day of the Solar Eclipse!
Teachers love wearing spirit wear and jeans on Fridays, but it's tough when you're and only have one shirt! One way we help our new teachers is by providing them unused or gently used Varina gear!
Read Across America Day 2019! It's an honor to lead this annual tradition. This year, we stayed longer and volunteered at the event. Our students led games and activities while inspiring younger students to be lifelong readers!
I serve as the Coordinator for the College Success Seminar program. This grant-funded program exposes students to the steps for success in preparedness, readiness, and sustainability in College. This year, we visited SEVEN Virginia universities!
I'm here with four Class of 2019 graduates!
A colleague and I coordinated at "Girls Night In" for a few young ladies at our school. I'm passionate about helping young people to succeed. Pictured here are a few of the students who participated in the event. One of our art teachers was kind enough to put together a paint night activity where the students painted silhouettes!
During my first year teaching, my colleague (pictured on the right) and I started a step team. The young lady in the middle was on our step team and now she is working on her PHD! She took some time out to come and speak to our College Success Seminar students about pathways to success and her career in the mental health field. What an honor to know her!
One of my favorite learning experiences. The School Librarian and I collaborated to engage students in a diversity audit of texts in the library.
I started a faculty book club with the intent of reading Dr. Ibram Kendi's How to Be an Antiracist and facilitate some professional learning on equity. As of May 2021, we've read a novel, an article, listened to 8 podcasts, and watched a documentary. This group has not only helped educators reflect on their practices, but it has also helped to develop their equity lens.
Admin team with rolling desks and go bags. What a true learning experience this school year has proven to be!
In February 2020, I invited parents, teachers, and support staff to my classroom for a breakfast with my students. The students split into groups and had to reflect on the marking period with their assigned adult. We also played a variety of academic games and read the first chapter of the novel we were preparing to read - Jackpot by Nic Stone. I really wanted to exemplify bringing the village into the classroom. The kids made connections with other adults, they deepened connections with each other, and had a community style learning experience. What a memorable day this was - for everybody.
I volunteer as a Reading Specialist for a local nonprofit organization. We solicited feedback from the students about their participation in the program. There are two posts in this padlet that particularly stick out to me - can you guess which two?
These two colleagues are my right hand for Black Advanced Placement Scholars and our Safety Action Team. We collaborate together and are passionate about increasing opportunities for our students.
I hosted one of our monthly #VATEchat for the Virginia Association of Teachers of English this fall. It's an opportunity to network and exchange ideas in the name of literacy.
I had the opportunity this year to work with several other people including the colleague pictured here to put together a month-long celebration for Black History Month.
I was really excited to present with 2 other colleagues in literacy at the Virginia State Literacy Association's annual conference, March 21. It was my FIRST virtual conference presentation (certainly not my last). We are a powerful presentation team.
Virtual set up for professional development. I needed to capture this - one of my strengths of my ability to adapt. I'm always in the business of doing what needs to be done to move forward; never has this skill been more essential than the 2020-2021 school year.
I was accepted into the 4th cohort of the Aspiring Leader Academy for Henrico County Public Schools. What an enlightening experience. I am fortunate to have had the opportunity to receive professional development from leaders across the division.
Here's a snippet from my HCPS Leadership Journey notebook. A few years ago, I attended a PD session on sketchnotes. I have always tried to detail my notetaking with highlighters and markers - I put those skills into use to make sure that my leadership notebook captures the essence of what I've learned this year.
