Section 2: Planning & Practice
I was deciding to get where to get my quote from. I decided to get some inspiration from shows I enjoyed watching. After going through the list of shows I've watched, I came across "Mob Psycho 100". It is a show about a psychic middle school boy who tries to live a normal life and keep his power under control, even though he constantly gets into trouble. This show was very enjoyable to watch, and near the end of the season, there was a mentor who comforted the main character. The words he chose to comfort the main character really touched my heart. As it was also reassuring for even me to hear. The words that really stood out were "When things go south, it's okay to run away"
Before actually sketching ideas onto the paper. I looked up some reference photos I could use on the internet that resembled manga or comic panels. I looked up the style that the show used too. I also looked up the scene that was happening and screenshotted them myself.
Section 3: Experimentation
I had to figure out how I was going to show shadow/depth in an object or figure. So after looking at the reference pictures, I decided to draw some clothing pieces and shade in the shadow parts to see if it would actually look like it has shadow without just coloring it all in black and not knowing what the figure/object looks like.
I had to sketch out some actual parts of my idea in order to decide if they were to fit well with each other and figure out the size of each part/section.
I also tested out the thickness of each pen so that I am aware of how each pen would look like on paper. I made sure to utilize thin pen to edges that were harder and smaller to draw.
Section 4: Process
(The process is with the mixture of project 4.1 & project 4.2)
Day 1:
I create multiple designs of this project in order to find the best way to portray the quote on the paper. After many readjustments, I was able to find a format where I can portray the message and overall theme of it. Project 4.1 is based on a comic and manga style, therefore, I used fonts that are frequently used in those. Meanwhile for project 4.2 I tried to utilize fonts that were more common but easier to visualize, because I wanted the words to stand out more.
Day 2:
I sketch out my plans and ideas onto the final paper. I have to use multiple reference photos to be able to replicate the scene of the moment. I tried to match it as close to the show as possible. Some aspects I took photos of my own hands to properly grasp the idea of how it would look like realistically. I had to adjust some lighting to be able to center the light at one destination.
Day 3:
With the ink pens I had at home, I begun inking the sketch I had done on the paper. I had ink the paper somewhat slowly--not too fast that I can't control it, but not too slowly that the lines are blotchy or not clean. So some aspects of tracing was difficult to maintain at the same pace. After a long time of inking, my hands were cramping, but I still decided to continue because I wanted to be able to finish tracing the lines that needs to be clean-like the edges of a paper or figure. For large areas I wanted to cover in black, I used a brush pen to limit the amount of pen marks it indents on the paper.
Day 4:
For 4.2 specifically, I used the pen to also put some texture strokes in shadows. For example on the hand, I used some cross-hatching to show an interesting way to portray a depth in figure. I also tried to use lines in general to show value in objects, even as thin as papers. I thought if I also used pen, the art piece wouldn't be as enjoyable to view, so I decided adding colors would aid it. I thought red, orange, blue, and purple can mix really well meanwhile, being able to show by how "warm" they are.
Section 5: Artist Statement
I believe I had a lot of fun working on this project.
In addition to finishing this project via inking (the medium I prefer using), I was also able to recreate a scenario from a show I absolutely adore.
The life of a middle schooler with supernatural abilities was depicted in this show in a very funny yet very serious way. He experiences the struggles of every villain and feels obligated to be the one to put an end to all evil. Consequently, throughout the episodes, it puts pressure on him to live up to expectations. In the end, he loses it when he has to battle a villain who is more powerful than him. When the main character is struggling, his mentor finally acknowledges it, saying, "When things go bad, it's okay to flee away." And as I watched that moment, it truly hit home for me and stuck in my mind. In such circumstances, I was also able to empathize with the main character.
I firmly feel that some of the shows I watched did in fact cause me to look in a different direction, even though it may seem a little cheesy or childish. Or even alter my perspective to one that is more uplifting. And this show was undoubtedly one of them. I still have a lot of affection for this program.
This, I believe, was one of the key factors in my decision to devote more time to this project than to other schoolwork. Of course, I give each subject and assignment my best effort, but this was one of the few tasks when I cared about the quality of the outcome more than the grade. I, therefore, believe that all of my efforts have been worthwhile, and I have no regrets about the time I have dedicated to this project.
Even though the lettering portion of this project was a little challenging for me because I had never done it before, I think it was a pleasant experience and helped me realize there is always more to art.
