Section 2: Inspiration
Geoffroy Thoorens
My inspiration was Geoffroy Thoorens, who specializes in illustration video game visuals. I wanted to create a self-designed architecture in a fantasy setting that could symbolize different emotions and experiences. I wanted to portray a pictorial space by using positive & negative space. Section 3: Planning & Practice
I decided to practice coloring and how to show texture & gradient while using complimentary colors (Characters: 98)
Creating interior & exterior composite sketches. Researching for architectural design ideas from Egypt, Rome, and Indonesia. Character design planning from Russian, Mongolian, and Argentinian culture. (Characters: 200)
Section 4: Experimentation
Experimenting with which style fits with the background. 1st image has style 3 & 4 together, while 2nd image has style 2. I used different sets of pen and markings to test out the visuals of shading an object. Styles 3 & 4 give a more messy yet detailed look, while Style 2 is more smoothed out. (Characters: 296)
Section 5: Process
Using only color to contour instead of lining my art. Then, smoothly blending proportions to shade and add texture to objects, compared to the simplistic base coloring of the background. Changing color of background to depict uneasiness. In the end, adding a color-filter layer to show unity. (Characters: 292)
Section 6: Reflection & Revision
This piece was definitely challenging for me.
My vision was that the abandoned kingdom would give a sense of deplete, but also a hint of life. So I was planning on adding more cultural patterns, environmental detail, and more realistic aspects. Almost like an aftermath of a war or battle.
My favorite part was definitely designing the character and architecture. Having to design and ideate a made-up world while finding inspiration from different real-life architecture and clothing was very productive.
However, my least favorite part was when I was trying to create the environment to be natural. Having to be rushed, the details is definitely lacking in this piece and I'm not quite too proud of how it came out. I originally had ideas and planned to make it more intricate, but had to be scrapped due to the time limit.
It did teach me about my personal difficulty limit that I should be aware of for future projects.
