Date of Completion: Dec 1st, 2024
Inquiry Question: How can I express/depict my experience and lessons learned from being burnt out in my life in diverse ways?
Ideas: Melting shows the process of breakdown/loss of control. Emotional collapse of an individual. (Characters: 92)
Materials: Digital Art, Ibis paint (Characters: 23)
Process: Bold color heightens intense stress; glossy look = superficiality → emotional collapse of burnout (Characters: 97)

Section 2: Inspiration
Yuming_art
Yuming_art is a digital artist known for creating dramatic scenes using complementary colors. Their ability to evoke emotion and intensity through vibrant color contrasts deeply influenced my approach, inspiring me to explore bold color choices and dynamic compositions in my own work. Section 3: Planning & Practice
Initial idea of body poses that depict falling down to the floor to express burning out. (Characters: 89)
Previous practices of body movement in dance. Practiced some form of shading poses too (Characters: 86)
Section 4: Experimentation
I experimented with realistic human skin tones to add authenticity, moving away from my previous abstract approach. I also referenced candle colors—warm yellows and reds—to explore complementary colors, creating dynamic contrasts that symbolize the burning-out process and emotional tension. (Characters: 291)
Section 5: Process
Coloring process involved layering and blending with a low-opacity brush to preserve textures. This technique created a wax-like effect, enhancing depth & value. Visible textures added a tactile quality, preventing the piece from looking overly smooth and giving it a more organic, dynamic feel (Characters: 293)
Section 6: Reflection & Revision
The title La Danse Brûlée ("The Burnt Dance") reflects the theme of burnout through the lens of performance, inspired by contemporary ballet poses and storytelling. The title is in French to honor ballet’s roots and its French terminology. The poses symbolize melting candles, representing the slow and inevitable process of burning out.
By personifying candles, I aimed to evoke the universal feeling of exhaustion many people experience. As a dancer, I often felt most burned out during ballet and contemporary practice, so this piece reflects both my personal journey and a shared experience. The study room setting highlights a common space where burnout often occurs, tying personal and universal elements together.
The coloring process was the most time-consuming part of this project. Blending the colors required several layers to achieve the desired effect. While fully blending could have worked, it would have removed the textures that add depth to the piece. I felt the textures enhanced the value and created a wax-like effect, so I used a low-opacity pen for subtle blending. The visible textures bring the artwork to life, making it feel more organic and less artificial, avoiding an overly smooth or glossy appearance.
