Title: Spring is Arriving
Size: 11.7 x 16.5 in
Date of Completion: Jan 20, 2025
Inquiry Question: How can I express/depict my experience and lessons learned from being burnt out in my life in diverse ways?
Ideas: Opposing force recovery. Boreas, cold north wind=tiring burnout; Zephyrus, bright spring wind=new hope (Characters: 100)
Materials: Pencil, Soft Pastel, and Color Pencil (Characters: 29)
Process: Boreas fall: exhaustion; Vivid Zephyrus: renewal. Contrast tone/dynamic pose: fatigue/heal = rebirth (Characters: 100)
Citations: Herbert James Draper, artist uses gesture → emotion/narrative with ethereal & symbolic compositions (Characters: 99)
Section 2: Inspiration
Herbert James Draper
Herbert James Draper’s depiction of winged figures inspires my work, especially his use of pose to express mood. I incorporate dynamic poses and fluid forms in my own figures, using their positioning and gesture to evoke emotion and narrative, much like Draper’s ethereal and symbolic compositions. (Characters: 298)

Section 3: Planning & Practice
Depict recovery from burnout using Boreas & Zephyrus, symbolizing renewal. Gentle wind of spring contrast w/ dark, heavy tones, signifying rebirth (Characters: 146)
Practiced drawing male bodies by focusing on anatomy, studying muscle structure, proportions, and dynamic poses, experimenting w/ foreshortening & balance (Characters: 154)
Section 4: Experimentation
Initially, I wanted Zephyrus ripping out of the canvas to emphasize movement, but I realized this would create folds in the canvas. Instead, I decided to keep both figures in the same space, exploring their dynamic interaction on a surface. This allowed for better balance/cohesion in the composition (Characters: 300)
Section 5: Process
I began by sketching the figures with pencil, refining their forms and poses. Then, I added color pencil to establish base tones. I layered pencil and soft pastels, building depth and contrast. I selectively applied vibrant colors to certain areas, enhancing movement and bringing the figures to life (Characters: 300)
Section 6: Reflection & Revision
In this piece, I explore the theme of overcoming burnout through the mythological figures of Boreas and Zephyrus, symbols of opposing forces that mirror the emotional journey of recovery. Boreas, the cold north wind, embodies the weight of exhaustion, stagnation, and the oppressive nature of burnout. Zephyrus, the gentle spring wind, represents the subtle yet steady renewal of energy and the eventual resurgence of hope.
The contrast between the dark, heavy tones associated with fatigue and the lighter, vibrant colors symbolizing spring highlights the tension between burnout and the potential for recovery. The dynamic poses of Boreas and Zephyrus reflect this struggle: Boreas trips over his own cape, a visual metaphor for the self-defeating cycles of exhaustion, while Zephyrus flies freely, embodying the liberation and vibrancy of recovery. This contrast emphasizes the struggle against burnout and the slow but determined movement toward healing.
Zephyrus is rendered in vibrant, oddly colored hues, reflecting the complexity and non-linear nature of recovery. The path to renewal is strange and not always easy, yet it is marked by moments of vivid transformation and growth. The layering of mediums, including pencil, colored pencil, and soft pastels, serves to create depth and texture, allowing the figures to emerge from the dark, heavy tones of burnout. This technique signifies that even in the depths of exhaustion, there is the possibility of rebirth.
Ultimately, this piece embodies the belief that burnout is not permanent. Just as the winds of spring can melt the cold of winter, we too can overcome the overwhelming fatigue of burnout. The gentle, persistent winds of Zephyrus offer a visual metaphor for the gradual process of reclaiming energy, suggesting that recovery may be slow but certain. This work serves as a reminder that, though burnout may feel overwhelming, renewal and strength will return in time.
