* The mtDNA frequencies set forth above under Behar are based upon the dataset considered in D. Behar, et al., MtDNA evidence for a genetic bottleneck in the early history of the Ashkenazi Jewish population, Eur J. Hum. Genet. 2004 May; 12(5): 355-64, which found, based upon 565 Ashkenazi samples, that "[t]he most prevalent Ashkenazi [mtDNA haplogroups] were K (32%), H (21%), N1b (10%), and J1 (7%), followed by other [haplogroups] at minor frequencies." The percentages set forth above were calculated using the supplementary data to that paper.
