2022 Analysis of Ashkenazi Y-DNA

Introduction

In December 2022, I used Family Tree DNA's Y-DNA Discover utility to analyze further each of the Y-DNA clusters that I identified through my 2018 analysis. By using reported information concerning the age and reported geographic origins of each cluster and its upstream branches, I was able to identify more precisely the SNP that defined each Ashkenazi cluster. In some instances, I found that Ashkenazi clusters were defined by a SNP that is one or two levels upstream (and, in one instance, a SNP that is one level downstream) from the SNP level that I had identified through my 2018 analysis.

This page lists each of the 45 primarily Ashkenazi Y-DNA clusters that I have identified through my 2018 analysis, as refined by my 2022 analysis. For each cluster, this page provides the following information, as compiled by using Family Tree DNA's Y-DNA Discover utility in December 2022: (1) the SNP defining the cluster; (2) the approximate date when that cluster formed; (3) the approximate date when that cluster began branching; (4) the number of FTDNA-tested men in that cluster as of December 18, 2022; (5) the percentage of FTDNA-tested men in that cluster of the total number of FTDNA-tested men in Ashkenazi Y-DNA clusters as of December 18, 2022; (6) the time to the Most Recent Common Ancestor ("MRCA") of the closest Y-DNA cluster in the current Ashkenazi population, and the SNP defining that cluster; (7) the ancestral path of each cluster (i.e., the level-defining SNP at each level, starting at the base of the haplogroup and going to the present day); (8) each downstream subcluster within each cluster that began branching in 1300 CE and earlier, linked to FTDNA's Discover page for that cluster, along with the date that each cluster was formed, the date that each cluster began to branch, and the number of Y-DNA tested men in each cluster as of December 18, 2022 (indented numbers show the order of branching of each subcluster); and (9) the immediate upstream cluster, the date on which  each such cluster began to branch, the clusters that are parallel to the Ashkenazi cluster, and the reported geographic origins of men in those clusters. For each Ashkenazi cluster, this page posts a graph that shows the number of branches in each cluster at 50-year intervals from 600 CE through 1300 CE.

For the most part, the 2022 analysis confirms the analysis performed in 2018.  There are, however, a few differences between the 2022 analysis and the 2018 analysis.

1.   As discussed in annotations on the 2018 analysis, newly available information from FTDNA concerning the estimated dates of formation and branching of clusters and their geographic distribution allowed me to refine identification of the SNPs identifying the principal Ashkenazi clusters. In 15 instances, this new information allowed a determination that Ashkenazi clusters were one or two levels downstream from the level identified through the 2018 analysis. In one instance, the new information showed that an Ashkenazi cluster was a level upstream from that identified through the 2018 analysis. The new analysis also showed that a cluster identified as predominantly Ashkenazi in the 2018 analysis (J1-ZS4763) is not predominantly Ashkenazi, although a significant number of men in the present-day Ashkenazi population belong to that cluster.

2.  For the most part, the identified Y-DNA clusters in the modern Ashkenazi population do not have parallel branches in the modern Ashkenazi population. The exceptions are: (1) J1-BY101 and J1-ZS24763, which share an MRCA in 300 CE (those clusters have a parallel cluster that includes men from Mexico and Spain); (2) J2-FT69390 and J2-FGC30508, which share an MRCA in 500 BCE (those clusters have a parallel branch that includes a man from Morocco); (3) J2-Z38408 and J2-L254, which share an MRCA in 500 BCE (those clusters have a parallel branch that includes a man from Greece and four men of unstated origins); and (4) Q-Y2198 and Q-YP1003, which share an MRCA in 250 CE (those clusters have a parallel branch that includes men from Brazil, Greece, Italy, Mexico, and Portugal). The reported ancestry of the men in the parallel clusters (and especially in the first, second, and fourth clusters) suggests that each of the clusters shares an MRCA in the pre-Ashkenazi Jewish population. 

3.  The analysis identifies 19 clusters that formed in or before 950 BCE and that did not begin branching until 600 CE or later. Those clusters are: (1) E-Y14891; (2) E-BY7500; (3) E-Z17697; (4) E-BY11082; (5) G-BY764; (6) G-FGC249; (7) G-L201; (8) I-BY424; (9) J1-ZS10568; (10) J2-L556; (11) J2-Z43501; (12) L-PAGES00116; (13) R1a-Y2619; (14) R1a-BY33370; (15) R1b-A11711; (16) R1b-Z18106; (17) R1b-L408; (18) T-BY11520; and (19) T-PAGES00113.  There are eight more clusters that formed between 800 BCE and 350 BCE and did not begin branching until 600 CE or later: (1) E-Y36800; (2) J1-L816; (3) J1-S12192; (4) J1-ZS4297; (5) J2-Z30390; (6) J2-FGC21083; (7) R1b-FGC20759; and (8) R1b-L4. None of those 27 clusters has a parallel Ashkenazi branch. The clusters in haplogroups E and J generally have parallel branches in the Near East, the Middle East, or countries where one might expect to find descendants of Sephardim (including Mexico and Spain). The clusters in haplogroups G, I, L, and T generally have parallel branches in Europe. The clusters in R1a and R1b are mixed as to their parallel branches, with (1) R1a-Y2619 having a parallel branch centered in Iran, (2) R1a-BY33370 having a parallel branch without any geographic information, (3) R1b-FGC20759 having parallel branches in countries where one might expect to find descendants of Sephardim, and (4) R1b-A11711, R1b-L4, R1b-Z18106, and R1b-L408 having parallel branches in Europe. 

4.  The analysis identifies another 13 clusters that formed in or after 100 BCE and that did not begin branching until 600 CE or later. Those clusters are: (1) E-Y6940; (2) I-Y11261; (3) I-Y23115; (4) J1-ZS2616; (5) J1-FGC5215; (6) J1-FGC17481; (7) R1a-YP1013; (8) R1b-Y19862; (9) R1b-FGC8564; (10) R1b-FGC21047; (11)  R1b-FGC14600; (12) R2-FGC13211; and (13) T-Y105938. The clusters in haplogroups E and J generally have parallel branches in the Near East, the Middle East, or countries where one might expect to find descendants of Sephardim. The clusters in haplogroups I, R1a, and R1b generally have parallel branches in Europe (however,  R1b-FGC8564 and R1b-FGC21047 have parallel branches in countries where one might expect to find descendants of Sephardim), while R2-FGC13211 has a parallel branch with men from Georgia and India and T-Y105938 has a parallel branch with a man from Ireland.  

5.  Presumably because of the bottleneck in the Ashkenazi population, most of the Y-DNA clusters in the current Ashkenazi population do not have parallel Y-DNA clusters in the current Ashkenazi population pre-dating the Common Era. Thus, the fact that there are no present-day parallel Y-DNA clusters for these clusters does not, by itself, suggest that the clusters were not Jewish at the time that the clusters formed. Based upon the current Y-DNA evidence alone, there is no way to tell when each of these clusters entered the Jewish population, up until the time when those clusters began branching in the period from 700 CE to 1300 CE; however, the fact that each of these clusters is predominantly Ashkenazi on all branches indicates that the MRCA of each cluster belonged to the Ashkenazi (or proto-Ashkenazi) population at the time when such branching began. Clusters with relatively recent upstream branching and parallel branches that are predominantly European (and not from countries where one might expect to find descendants of Sephardim) are more likely to have entered the Ashkenazi population from the non-Jewish European population during the  first millenium CE or the first several centuries of the second millenium CE.

6.  As expected, for most of the clusters, there were very few branches as of 600 CE (in some instances, there was only a single branch). However, the 2018 analysis underestimated the number of Y-DNA branches in the current Ashkenazi population that date back to the time when the Ashkenazi population began its massive expansion out of a small bottlenecked population, about 700 to 1,000 years ago. In the 2018 analysis, I estimated that most of the men in the current Ashkenazi population are descended on their direct male lines from perhaps 120 to 150 Ashkenazi Y-DNA lines that existed as of the time of the bottleneck.  As indicated by the following chart and based on full Y-DNA testing reported by Family Tree DNA as of December 18, 2022, most of the men in the current Ashkenazi population are descended on their direct male lines from: (1) about 65 men who lived as of 600 CE; (2) about 229 men who lived as of 1000 CE; and (3) about 583 men who lived as of 1300 CE. 

As more men test, these figures will be refined; in particular, there is likely to be some increase in the number of Ashkenazi Y-DNA lines as of 1000 CE and a significant increase in the number of Ashkenazi Y-DNA lines as of 1300 CE. However, additional test results will also result in changes to the estimated age of certain subclusters, which may result in certain clusters being given an estimated formation date that postdates 1300 CE (and, thus, postdates the bottleneck in the Ashkenazi population).

7.  The following chart shows the percentage of FTDNA-tested men in each Ashkenazi Y-DNA cluster as of December 18, 2022 as determined through the 2022 analysis.

There are likely several reasons for these discrepancies.

First, the 2018 analysis and the 2022 analysis consider somewhat different populations. The 2018 analysis was directed towards men who appeared to be part of the present-day Ashkenazi population based upon their autosomal DNA; by reason of the methodology used to identify the men who were included in the analysis, that sample would necessarily have included some men who were not Ashkenazi on their direct male lines (but were largely Ashkenazi on other lines). By contrast, the 2022 analysis is directed towards men in the present-day population who belong to Y-DNA clusters that part of the Ashkenazi (or proto-Ashkenazi) population as of 700 to 1,500 years ago; that sample includes a significant number of men whose percentage of Ashkenazi ancestry is too distant (sometimes by centuries) for them to have been included in the 2018 analysis.

Second, perhaps the most significant difference between the 2018 analysis and the 2022 analysis is the decrease in the percentage of men in haplogroup E from 21.89% to 16.66%. This decline apparently reflects the fact that FTDNA reported a significant number of men as E-Y6923 based not on Big Y testing but on other testing, most likely Geno 2.0. Because the 2022 analysis showed that E-Y6940 - not E-Y6923 - is the SNP that defines the Ashkenazi cluster within E-Y6940, the 2022 analysis removes the men reported as E-Y6940 from the calculations of haplogroup percentages. The reported percentage of Ashkenazi men in haplogroup E decreased primarily because the 2022 analysis showed that a significant percentage of the men reported as E-Y6923 at the time of the 2018 analysis had not done Big Y testing as of 2022.

Third, the sample set considered for the 2022 analysis is likely skewed by self-selection among the men who have done full Y-DNA testing through FTDNA.  Because men with more Y-DNA STR matches are more likely to do Big Y testing than are men with few Y-DNA STR matches, the larger Y-DNA clusters will tend to be overrepresented among Big Y testers. Furthermore, there are certain clusters (including the R1a-Y2619 Ashkenazi Levite cluster, certain Ashkenazi J clusters, and the Ashkenazi Q  clusters) that have successfully recruited a significant number of men to do Big Y testing between 2018 and 2022, thereby inflating the proportion of Big Y-tested men in these clusters as compared to the Ashkenazi clusters that did not benefit from such recruitment efforts. (The sample set used for the 2022 analysis includes 2,617 men; if 13 additional men in a haplogroup test, the reported percentage of men in that haplogroup will increase by 0.5%.)

The following is a list of the principal Ashkenazi Y-DNA clusters identified through my December 2022 analysis, along with the dates that each cluster was formed and began to  branch according to Family Tree DNA's Y-DNA Discover utility as of December 18, 2022. The list states the percentage of FTDNA-tested men in that cluster of the total number of FTDNA-tested men in Ashkenazi Y-DNA clusters as of December 18, 2022.
