IEPs and 504 Plans

The Difference Between IEPs and 504 Plans

There are important differences between Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and 504 Plans that parents and caregivers should know.

An important similarity they share is both kinds of plans document accommodations that should be provided to help your child better access his or her education curriculum. The shared purpose of these plans is to keep your child learning and reaching their full potential.

Sometimes, a child’s journey through special education begins with a 504 Plan. With careful oversight and diligence, a parent or caregiver may decide to request a school evaluation if the child’s academic performance doesn’t improve with the accommodations provided under their 504 Plan. The results of that evaluation would determine if the child should be placed on an IEP or if the 504 Plan should be adjusted.
