My first foray into the world of game design, at least within the Unity Engine, came in my second year of university, in the form of Yukorikka. This colourful 2D platformer takes place on a distant world, where the force of gravity is so strong that not even our protagonist, the lowly Yuk-Beetle, can overcome it. Without the ability to jump, players are forced to find more creative ways to solve puzzles. Fortunately, while that feature we so often take for granted is removed, our Yuk-Beetle possesses a much more useful skill...
By pressing the 'W' and 'S' keys, the player is able to change the colour of their shell, and can only touch obstacles which match their current colour. For example, to cross a blue bridge, the player would need to be blue, but to pass through a blue door, they would need to be red. In addition to this, there are purple obstacles, which the player can always pass through, and black obstacles, which can never be passed through. By changing to the right colour at the right time, the player can navigate these simple puzzles and progress to the next level.
Though Yukorikka was limited in scope and fairly rudimentary, it marks the starting point of my journey as a game developer, and demonstrates the technical progression I have made in subsequent years. I would later go on to expand the game in my free time, adding an additional level, new mechanics and a number of bug fixes.
