My first attempt at a 3D game in the Unity Engine, Kunekune was developed alongside Yukorikka during my second year of university. Largely based on a Japanese urban legend of the same name, Kunekune takes place in the remote foothills of the Yamagata Mountains (a fact which is somewhat poorly conveyed by the perfectly flat terrain of the game itself). The story follows an unnamed individual who is run off the road by an ominous figure in the middle of the night. Leaving the safety of their car, the player must explore the eerie location and collect a series of clues to uncover the disappearance of a local child at the hands of the illusive 'Kunekune'. This formula was inspired by the infamous Slender video game series of the early 2010s, which has long been an inspiration of mine as an example of simple yet effective atmospheric horror.
When developing Kunekune, the most important aspect was the environmental storytelling, making sure that the plot was conveyed slowly through each clue that the player finds. First, they find a newspaper, with a front page story on the mysterious disapperances in the area. They can then find a pencil case belonging to a young girl called 'Ayumi', as well as a concerning note from her father and a frantically scribbled illustration of the 'Kunekune' on a blackboard. All of these clues were original assets, while most of the scenery, which was less integral to the story, was sourced from the Unity Asset Store. If you would like to play Kunekune for yourself, you can download it here.
