Magueys are the group of plants in Mexico considered with the most diverse and numerous uses. They are also national cultural patrimony.
There are 166 species of agaves in the world, of which 125 are considered native species to Mexico and approximately 58 % are are endemic to the country, that is they can only be found in the wild in Mexican territory.
Magueys belong to the family agavaceae, which has a wide distribution restricted to the American continent. They range from North Dakota in the U.S., and all the way to the south through the Andes as far as Bolivia and Paraguay and including the Antilles .
Magueys are grouped in the genus Agave, which means "noble" or "admirable", and was made known to science by Carlos Linnaeus since 1753 .
