Each year, we compete in the ASCE/AISC Steel Bridge Competition. The goal is to build a bridge of steel that meets specific requirements. All bridges are constructed in pieces called members that are up to three feet long. Once constructed at the competition, each bridge is subjected to load testing where 2500 pounds are loaded onto the bridge to see how much it deflects. We learn a great deal in preparing for the competition and try to have fun in the process.
The picture below shows our 2017 bridge deflecting only 1.31 inches out of the allowable three inches.
