You will create an imaginary animal by combining two or more real animals. I will give demonstrations in imitating the look of wood cuts using pen and ink, sharpies, and Micron pens. You will sketch your animals and complete one in the "woodcut" style.
HERE is a printable pdf of animal skeletons, including a cow, sheep, pig, and goat.
If you would like to buy a book on animal drawing, I recommend either of these:
Drawing Animals, by Adams and Singer, pub. by Watson-Guptill
Animal Anatomy, by Ellenberger, pub. by Dover
First, we'll compare the animals limbs and the direction of the bend in their joints to those of humans. Then we'll practice sketching, using the length of the animal's head as a unit of measure to establish their height and length.
B. Waterhouse Hawkins, Man, Gorilla, and Bear, 1860
Pierre Belon, 1560
We'll use these woodcuts for inspiration in developing style, line, and hatching techniques.
