Ted Dyer was born in Bristol in 1940 and has lived for most of his life in the West Country, first in Somerset and Devon, before moving with his entire family to Cornwall in 1972. Capturing the beauty of the region in his paintings has propelled him into becoming acclaimed internationally for his paintings, limited edition prints, art cards and books. He has also held many successful exhibitions. Ted Dyer's art is portrayed with soft colour, light and shade, warmth and friendliness. Close colour harmonies and the particular effect of light are all important to his work. The scenes he captures are usually actual locations in the West Country. He uses the subtle hues created by the early morning or evening sun to fill his canvas with that indefinably delicate touch. He takes great care with the composition of his paintings using human figures as an integral part of the total scene. The complex compositions at first appear simple with each element falling so naturally into place. The grouping of the figures help to create a uniquely narrative style and the apparently accidental colour placements are carefully juxtaposed to create a feeling of life and unity within the canvas. Ted Dyer has been influenced by many different artists and groups including the vitality of the early school of French plain-air artists through to the Newlyn School and more recently the representational section of the British contemporary art scene. These different threads of influence and ideas have combined to act as a background and foundation for his work.
Ted Dyer has published a number of books including "Paintings of Tresco" with an introduction by his daughter and containing nearly 80 fine reproductions of his paintings. Ted Dyer is the father of John Dyer, painter in residence to the Eden Project in Cornwall and Official Artist for the Funchal Falmouth Tall Ships Regatta 2008.
Ted Dyer's paintings are highly collectable and have fetched up to US$1,500 at auction with the market for his paintings on a rising trend
