Rob Ijbema (sometimes spelled Ijbemaa) was born in Amsterdam in 1961 and showed artistic promise as early as aged twelve when he started to practise his art by making copies of paintings by Rembrandt and Monet. However, his artistic talent and his life long passion for cars and speed initially took him into the field of modelmaking. He became highly skilled in creating exquisitely fashioned models of racing cars, complete in every detail, which he sold to some of the most famous Grand Prix racing car drivers of the time. And this early attention to detail as well as his total early immersion in the world of motor racing was to stand him in good stead when he transferred his talents to the field of automotive art. Since then he has never looked back, with his amazing paintings capturing the very essence of the speed and excitement of motor sport.
Rob’s paintings, mostly executed in oils or acrylics in a delicate impressionistic style and often themselves created at high speed, completely encapsulate the sense of danger and speed inherent in motor racing. Arguably the artist has since applied his amazing talent even more successfully in the field of international cycle racing.
Rob Ijbema’s work is now in demand by art collectors, galleries and racing enthusiasts all over the World. In contrast to the drama and excitement expressed in his remarkable images, the artist himself now lives quietly in a small rural village in Wales, UK.
