What is I-Ching?
Chinese Metaphysics or the I-Ching is an ancient wisdom tradition deeply rooted in Chinese culture. Thousands of years ago, people simply observed how everything in life move in natural cycles: how the day turns into night, how seasons flow from spring to winter and back again. I-Ching originates from these observations to help people understand the rhythm of change and learn how to flow with it, rather than fight against it.
At the heart of I-Ching lies Yin and Yang. They are opposite yet complementary forces that keep the universe in balance. I-Ching expresses the different force patterns through 64 hexagrams. Each hexagram reveals a stage of change and transformation, which reminds us that every challenge, like every season, has its time and purpose.
Over generations, I-Ching formed the foundation for traditional Chinese culture and wisdom that connects our inner world with the world around us. Its principles have profoundly influenced Chinese philosophy through Confucianism and Laozi’s Tao Te Ching, established religious foundations of Taoism, and address societal needs through the Five Arts.
Each Art is derived based on core I-Ching principles. Together they offer various ways to improve our daily lives:
Mountain: Cultivation practices - meditation, talisman drawing, martial arts
Medicine: Healing body through balance in Traditional Chinese Medicine
Life Analysis: Self awareness in Bazi (Eight Characters of Destiny)
Divination: Insights from King Wen’s and Plum Blossom Divination
Environment: Aligning nature's energy through Feng Shui
What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is not about emptying the mind or achieving a special state. It is simply to notice our inner mental or emotional states and observing how our external environment unfolds, without judgement or control. This enables us to have clarity and be truly present in our every moment.
Attention. Mindfulness begins with paying attention to our inner state such as thoughts, emotions or bodily sensations; and our outer states such as physical environment, human interactions and the flow of events around you.
Acceptance. The next step is to allow it to be. Acceptance is not passive but simply acknowledging what is happening without judgement, avoidance or overthinking. This step helps us to respond instead of reacting.
Awareness. Through steady attention and acceptance, deeper awareness arises by connecting the dots and revealing repeated patterns, triggers, habits that influence how we think, feel and act. This step allows us to be aware of the root issues behind.
Insight. Through attention, acceptance and awareness, we derive insights that can be applied to future situations. This enables us to make wiser decisions and navigate life with steadiness. It will transform how we relate to change, challenges, stress and uncertainty.
What is the link between I-Ching and Mindfulness?
Practising mindfulness enables us to accept both good and bad sides as one, in every moment of our life. When paired with I-Ching, awareness and insight derived from how nature works, becomes a powerful guide to understanding the rhythm of change and reconnecting with our true potential.
