Bazi, or the Eight Characters, is not about "destiny" or mysterious change; it is a sophisticated system of Personal Intelligence that helps you understand your innate blueprint so you can live and work strategically.
In our practice, we have observed a common misconception: that Bazi can magically change a person's life from bad to good (often referred to as 改命). However, we believe the truth is far more practical.
Grounded in our backgrounds in science and engineering, we define the scope of Bazi using this simple, actionable formula:
Bazi = Life + Opportunities + Experiences
1. Life (命): Your Innate Blueprint
'Life' encompasses your fixed personal characteristics. This is your energetic starting point which highlights the set of strengths, shortfalls, and personality traits you were born with.
Self-Awareness: Your Bazi chart enables you to gain attention of your own character, personality, inherent talents, emotional states, maximum life potential or growth areas and greatest life barriers. Self-awareness is important as it enables you to be mindful and accept "who you are?", as-it-is and without any judgement.
Relationship Dynamics: Your Bazi chart outlines your relationship patterns with family and friends.
Health: Potential health issues can be identified but not as certainties; in which these health areas are higher in probability in becoming root causes for illness.
We prefer the term 'Opportunities' over 'Destiny' or 'Luck' because it reflects reality. Life is a series of choices, and where you are now is a result of the decisions you have made along your path.
If life were truly pre-destined, why strive for success? If success were only due to luck, why do people work smart and hard?
Strategic Timing: Bazi cycles (annual or 10-year) reveal periods whereby opportunities are more supportive or suited for taking action. Hence, this guides us to align our growth and execution in the right opportunity periods.
Working Smart: During high-opportunity periods, the strategy is to work smart and hard to capture maximum gains. This period is also a major test of how you manage your own success.
Focused Action: During low-opportunity periods, the strategy shifts to taking focused, targeted action, conserving energy while waiting for the right moment. This period is especially important to prepare and grow yourself so that you are ready to take action during high opportunity periods.
Experiences are the ongoing input that shapes your Life. You learn, adapt, and grow from the situations around you, including your social circle and the consequences of the choices you make during periods of Opportunity.
Holistic View: We view the chart holistically. For instance, concerns about a 'missing element' in Bazi need not be a source of worry. There is nothing unwholesome about it and we just need to be consciously aware of this characteristic. Life is not about a perfect balance at birth; it's about the being attentive and accepting of your own Life, and find ways to enrich and grow yourself through learning. As you adapt to fill those gaps through experience and mindful effort, your life can then be transformed.
