The hospital activity produces a large amount and variety of waste, some classified as hazardous causing damage to the environment and human health. Among these are also recyclable items, which if not properly separated and captured, results in a waste of discarded material, decreasing landfills’ life span. Instead, it could enter a recycling chain creating extra gains and other social benefits .

Even when many of these products are sent for recycling, their potential reuse are not fully exploited . It is usually only focused at the basic raw material, lacking a more selective vision of sustainability in the management process.
