In addition to coordinating with police, health, rural fire, and the department of conservation, GBMR also collects trip reports, distributes local information, offers timetables for flights and ferries, and does other things.
Every day at around 7:45 and 17:45, marine weather bulletins are aired.
Coverage extends around 100 miles beyond Aotea/Great Barrier Island from the Aldermans to Tutukaka. Channel 16 and Channel 01 are under listening watch around-the-clock, but from 10:00 pm to 7:00 am. Only for emergency transmissions.
Please be aware that because the service relies on solar electricity, sloppy microphone stowage (an open mic) can block the channel and level the system.
GBMR is a nonprofit organisation that receives funding from membership fees. Call 09 429 0281, send an email to emmygbmr@gmail.com, or write to GBMR at Claris RD1, Aotea, Great Barrier Island if you'd like to join.
