“The coastal trail showcases some of the stunning scenery of the motu as well as highlighting one of our centres – Stonewall Village,” commented Patrick, the local board deputy chair.
“We’re pleased that this long-awaited project is nearly finished. The wayfinding signage is simple and discreet. Aimed at pedestrians, incorporating bilingual place names helps navigate around this historic coastline."
The project, envisioned since 2019, took form when the Aotea / Great Barrier Local Board greenlit the design and placement of 11 wayfinding bollards.
The project team collaborated closely with Ngāti Rehua, to restore te reo Māori place names.
Locals and tourists alike can now look forward to a more informative and engaging walk, appreciating the rich history and breathtaking views the trail has to offer according to O’Shea.
The signs, now completed, will be installed in October.
