The residents of Motairehe are grappling with the sudden loss of a man who was a fixture in their lives for four decades, Peter Schmidt, affectionately remembered by those he touched for his generous spirit and artistic mastery.
Paula Williams, a respected local, shared her memories of Peter. "Peter first came to the island as a friend and caregiver to one of our late kuia. For years, he was by their side, tending to gardens and offering companionship," she said. Peter's dedication to the community's elders has left an indelible mark on those who witnessed his kindness.
His talents as an artist were as notable as his compassion. "Peter was an artist who drew and carved the most intricate objects as gifts," Williams reflected. Despite enduring a challenging start to his artistic career in Germany, Peter continued to create and share his work with those around him.
Williams also shed light on the motivation for Peter's move to Aotea. "He started his career as a printmaker in a diabolical work environment. The effects of the printing chemicals, used in an unventilated factory, remained with him throughout his life," she explained.
Known for his intelligence, Peter found solace in literature and the company of his beloved dog. "He was an extremely intelligent man who eventually found comfort in locking himself away in towers of books with his best friend, Dog," Williams said, with affection.
His unique Christmas cards were a highlight for many during the holiday season. "We will all miss those funny Christmas cards this year," Williams noted with a sense of nostalgia.
The news of Peter's death came following a gas explosion on the north end of the island. Authorities responded to a fire at a property on Motairehe Road. The fire, which resulted in Peter's death, is currently being treated as unexplained and has been referred to the coroner, with no suspicions of foul play according to police statements.
"Rest in Peace, Peter," Williams said, voicing a sentiment felt by many as they recall the man whose life was as intricate and beautiful as the art he created.
