On your dining table, coffee table, breakfast table, or any other surface you can prepare the night before, you lay out specific boxes of toys with different tasks, free-play toys, pre-drawn activities for kids to complete, creative tasks, and so much more! It is extra work the night before, but the more my past self gets done, the happier my morning self is 😅 How often it really happens, though, is still a work in progress.
Screen-free or screen-reduced mornings help with attitude, attention, and interaction--at least, from what I've seen! Kids don't always have the best attitudes when they've been on screens for a while. Plus, we want them to learn how to create and focus without the aid of technology.Â
Tech is amazing, and can really deepen activities. However, my philosophy is that it needs to be intentional, to deepen the experience, not a replacement for the activity. Don't get me wrong, homeschool moms have sick days/tired days too, and when you're in need, whip out that tv remote and pop on something fun to watch/do (check out my *future* post on interactive tv activities) while you try to rest up!
I also love morning table time, because it adds to a routine. Kids LOVE routines! Predictability also helps with their attitude, attention, and interaction. When you don't have to wonder what's going to happen next every second of every day, it lowers the cognitive load and opens up the mind to deeper thinking!
