Andy Dahl

Assistant Professor

andywdahl@uchicago.edu

Andy did math undergrad at UChicago and was thrilled to return as faculty in 2020. Andy's research has focused on developing computational methods to analyze the genetics of common diseases, starting with a stat MS at UChicago (w Pritchard), then DPhil at Oxford (w Steinsaltz and others), and postdoc at UCSF/UCLA (w Zaitlen). Outside work, Andy likes climbing, skiing, and playing piano.

Minhui Chen

Postdoc

Minhui is a postdoc in the lab. His reseach focuses on developing statisical methods and computation tools for single-cell RNA sequencing data to decompose the genetics of complex traits in humans. Prior to joining the lab, he was a postdoc with Prof. Charleston Chiang at USC, where he studied the polygenic adaptation of human heights. He completed his PhD in Animal Genetics at China Agricultural University and PhD in Genetics at Aarhus University, Denmark. Outside work, Minhui likes running, hiking, and watching cartoons.

Manuela is a second year PhD student in GGSB. She is interested in developing statistical methods to identify disease subtypes. Before joining the lab, she completed a degree in computational neuroscience at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. She studied sex differences in the context of brain ageing and Alzheimer’s disease using structural MRI. Outside of work, Manuela likes yoga, reading and crochet.

Ophelia Dominguez

Undergraduate Student

Ophelia is a 3nd year Undergraduate pursuing a degree in computational biology and anthropology. Inside the lab her research focuses on complex trait genetics and developing statistical tools to reduce bias in medical contexts. More broadly, she is is interested in researching the gaps between academic knowledge production and practical application. Outside the lab she is involved in urban beekeeping, tap dancing, and makes a killer sourdough.

Renée Fonseca

PhD Student

Renée Fonseca is a Human Genetics Ph.D. student within the Biological Sciences Division. Prior to attending the University of Chicago, she was a Fulbright research grantee at the Universidad del Valle in Cali, Colombia identifying gene variants associated with glaucoma in an Afro-Colombian population. She has a Master of Science in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology from the University of South Florida, an Artium Baccalaureus in Biology from Rollins College, and is a certified Emergency Medical Technician. Renée is broadly interested in the genetic architecture of complex traits, risk prediction, and disease burden in diverse populations. Outside of the lab she enjoys playing piano, salsa dancing, being outside, and working in the community.

Hyunkyung Kim

PhD Student

Hyunkyung is a third-year PhD student in Genetics. Her research interest focuses on understanding genetic mechanisms of complex diseases using statistical and computational approaches. Prior to attending the University of Chicago, she worked as a Bioinformatics Specialist at the Massachusetts General Hospital. She earned her Master’s degree in Computational Biology at Harvard School of Public Health and Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at Yonsei University, Korea. Outside work, Hyunkyung likes swimming and watching Netflix
