I really enjoy teaching Composition 1. I hope to build your confidence and give you opportunities to practice rhetorical flexibility. You will begin (or continue) to develop the processes that work best for you. I aim to break bad habits and attitudes about writing and help you to see that writing can be powerful, active, social, and therapeutic.
Because writing is a skill-based class, I teach it through the lens of Social Identity. Interrogating how our own identities affects us as we move in this society can help us to become responsible citizens. I think we could all use a little more empathy, and if we understand the Complexity of Identity, we can develop a stronger sense of empathy.
We begin with self-examination in the Narrative Unit.
Next, we turn our gaze to the "other" in the Profile Unit.
Finally we shift our focus to media, analysis, and secondary research in preparation for Composition 2.
