Your role as an art educator is to create a supportive art environment where you can connect with your entire school community. When you take the time to allow students to embrace their unique artistic talents, you can foster a sense of belonging within your students. Mindful art programs provide students with tools for self-care, emotional expression, and connection, contributing to a positive school environment and improving well-being. Mindful collaborative art projects empower students and can spark creativity when students learn to welcome new perspectives. By nurturing these connections, teachers can forge strong relationships with their students and among the students themselves.
As art educators, incorporating mindful communication activities into your collaborative projects can spark enriching conversations during group planning and discussions on school-appropriate social issues, allowing student artists to design impactful murals collaboratively. Cultivating meaningful connections among the student body encourages students to engage their minds, bodies, and hearts in the present moment and create works of art that will positively impact their school community. Teaching with a vision of transformational change ignites reflective learners' awareness of the world and their unique place within it.
“We lift each other toward the sun,
Hold each other in the storm,
And nurture one another
With love.”
- Alarie Tennille
In honor of Black History Month, I worked with students to pays tribute to the achievements of African Americans within our community and throughout U.S. history. The repeated patterned tiles used as the border of our mural were created using the symbolic colors representing Black History Month: black, red, yellow, and green to symbolize unity and pride. Each face represents our school community, united by love, diversity, and inclusion. When we take time to educate ourselves and our children we will continue to have a bright future ahead of us.
The collaborative unit quilt represents harmony within our school. Piecing each student's quilt squares together represents what it means to unite as one community. When we started the year we were all beautiful individual works of art; halfway through the year, we've grown into a masterpiece through sharing, caring, and learning. We have become united on our educational journey; we can accomplish more than we can imagine.
Community Mural, inspired by the Street Artist ThankYou X. Artists learned about the power of positivity, the spirit of community, and collaboration. Our mural represents the importance of working together to achieve a common goal. Celebrating collective and individual wins allows us to become a strong and supportive school family.
