The U.S. labor market remained strong in 2019, as the unemployment rate fell to 3.5 percent, the lowest rate since 1969. Both the employment–population ratio and the civilian labor force participation rate increased over the year. Levels of long-term joblessness and involuntary part-time employment continued to trend down.
A decade after the end of the Great Recession, the U.S. economy continued to expand, and the labor market remained strong by historical standards. By the end of 2019, the economy had grown for 126 months or 42 quarters, making it the longest economic expansion on record.1 Most labor force measures continued to improve throughout 2019. Total employment, as measured by the Current Population Survey (CPS), expanded by 2.0 million, reaching 158.6 million by the end of the year. In addition, the employment–population ratio (the percentage of the population age 16 and over who are employed) continued to increase as well, reaching 61.0 percent. There were 5.8 million people unemployed in the fourth quarter of 2019, down 341,000 from a year earlier, and the jobless rate declined to 3.5 percent, the lowest rate in 50 years.
The United States suffered from a massive loss of manufacturing jobs in the 00s. This has come to be known as the “China Shock,” since it was associated with a flood of imports, especially from China, and a rapid rise in the U.S. trade deficit.
In 2018 the U.S. imported $115 billion of finished pharmaceutical products, with just $1.5 billion coming from China. One of the biggest national security threats in the U.S.-China trade war could be to the everyday medicines taken by millions of Americans.
The U.S. relies on imported medicines from China in a big way. Antibiotics, over-the-counter pain meds and the stuff that stops itching and swelling — a lot of it is imported from China.
“Medicines can be used as a weapon of war against the United States,” Rosemary Gibson, a senior adviser on health care issues at the bioethics-focused Hastings Center and co-author of “China Rx: Exposing the Risks of America’s Dependence on China for Medicine,” told lawmakers last month. “Supplies can be withheld. Medicines can be made with lethal contaminants or sold without any real medicine in them, rendering them ineffective.”
In the decade from December of 1999 to December of 2009, the economy lost more than 5.8 million manufacturing jobs, or more than one in three of the manufacturing jobs at the start of the decade. The vast majority of this job loss took place before the start of the Great Recession in December of 2007.
Government either routinely mismanage and waste resources, or ramp up production with little to no accountability for environmental damage that comes with it. The absence of price signals reduces the incentive to be more efficient and do more with less. A prime example of this is Biofuel.
The full environmental cost of biofuels is only now becoming clear. Corn is the chief plant for biofuel in America. As the demand for corn for biofuel increases so does the price for biofuel corn. Farmers who grow other crops are switching over to biofuel corn to cash in on this new oil well. At the time that the demand for biofuel corn raises so is the demand for food crops, this demand for food crops that was being met by the farmer who switched to biofuel corn is now being met by farmers in Brazil and elsewhere. To grow this food crop in Brazil farmers had to clear prehistoric rain forest to make room for these crops that require sunlight. Slash and burn of the rain forest of Brazil and many other places in the world.

Common sense has it that we must continue to produce the energy we’re using now and work to make it clean and safe to use while at the same time we are developing alternative energy sources. But it seems to me that big daddy (The government) messes up most of what it tries to do, even good projects such as alternative fuel sources.
What is the answer? What is the moral responsibility of the government? At what point does government dictates become intrusion into our personal lives? Seeing the past policy failures of our governments, can the government be trusted to make the right decisions?
The Green New Deal, Over Regulation, And Over taxation leads to our manufacturing moving overseas, and creating a trade deficit.
