Conferences and Other Events in Q3
AMA Summer Conference: This year’s AMA summer conference brought together scholars and practitioners to explore cutting-edge developments shaping the future of marketing research. Among the highlights was the workshop titled “New Data: Opportunities and Challenges”, featuring our own Shane Wang, along with Ryan S. Elder, Steve Shaw, Uma Karmarkar, and PK Kannan. This thought-provoking expert session examined how emerging data sources—ranging from sensory marketing cues and genetic and biometric information to neuroscience and real-time geospatial data—are transforming the ways researchers generate insights and develop marketing strategies.
MSI/IJRM Conference on Analytics and Forecasting: This conference focused on synthetic data and other uses of AI in market research, including new product development, digital twins and personas, attribution and conjoint analysis. Our own Koen Pauwels, who also edits the International Journal of Research in Marketing's Special Issue on the topic, prepared these takeaways from Day 1 and Day 2! Shane Wang also showcased how digital twins trained on Amazon review data could predict purchases and generate semantically faithful reviews, illustrating both their potential and their tendency to over-smooth human messiness.
ACR: The ACR conference took place from October 9–12 in Washington DC, under the theme “Buying and Beyond.” AISIG collaborated with the conference organizers to curate keynote sessions focused on artificial intelligence—specifically, how AI technologies can be designed to foster trust and promote consumer welfare. The plenary session featured talks by Michael Luca and Scott Stornetta, followed by an interesting fireside chat with Stefano Puntoni and Cait Lamberton.
What’s New in Practice:
Italy just became the first EU country to pass a sweeping AI law — with strict rules, child protections, and even jail time for harmful deepfakes: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/sep/18/italy-first-in-eu-to-pass-comprehensive-law-regulating-ai?utm_source=chatgpt.com
New California law requires AI to tell you it’s AI - As of October 13th, 2025, California has passed a bill into a law that requires that companion chatbot developers implement new safeguards — for instance, “if a reasonable person interacting with a companion chatbot would be misled to believe that the person is interacting with a human,” then the new law requires the chatbot maker to “issue a clear and conspicuous notification” that the product is strictly AI and not human: New California law requires AI to tell you it’s AI | The Verge
