Educators facilitate learning by integrating computational thinking practices into the classroom. Since computational thinking is a foundational skill, educators develop every student’s ability to recognize opportunities to apply computational thinking in their environment.
5a: Evaluate and use CS and CT curricula, resources, and tools that account for learner variability to meet the needs of all students.
5b: Empower students to select personally meaningful computational projects.
5c: Use a variety of instructional approaches to help students frame problems in ways that can be represented as computational steps or algorithms to be performed by a computer.
5d: Establish criteria for evaluating CT practices and content learning that use a variety of formative and alternative assessments to enable students to demonstrate their understanding of age-appropriate CS and CT vocabulary, practices and concepts.
In the course of this task, my initial intention was to evaluate students using Flip. However, considering the given time and the students not being equipped with technological devices, I opted for an overall group work participation. I conducted the assessment using my cellular device and allowed students to record themselves acting out the life cycle of a flower/plant. Despite the shift in plans, I successfully measured learning outcomes, showcasing the flexibility of the approach.
The flexibility of my activity was designed to cater to diverse student reading levels and foster engagement. For the My Hero Story project, I employed AI to generate a digital story that students could navigate. The story featured an audio system for reading aloud, aiding those with lower reading proficiency and saving time.The children thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on experience.
