Tips for our First-Time Volunteers & general FAQ's

Why Volunteer?

Because it's fun! There's a wide variety of reasons why our volunteers choose to help. Some want to socialize, have fun, make new friends, test leadership skills, learn something new, share a skill/talent, have an impact, get to know & feel a part of the community, and/or all of the above! Whatever the reason you choose to volunteer, we appreciate you!

How do I become a volunteer?

Anything you volunteer for during school hours requires a background clearance. They're good for 2 years and allow you access to field trips, volunteer in classrooms, and for anything the PTA hosts. For more specifics use this link to be directed to the APS Volunteer site APS VOLUNTEER .  Once you have your clearance, you can sign up for any volunteer opportunities during school hours! You're welcome to sign up for any and all opportunities outside of school hours without a clearance.

What if I don't have the time during school hours?

No worries, at all! Reach out! Let us know how you'd like to help, and what you'd like to do- and we'll work to put your skills to tasks you could do at home. Contact us at alvaradoAbqPTA@gmail.com to discuss some options.

Do I have to be a PTA Member to Volunteer?

Have to? No, not at all! You're welcome to volunteer for events and things we do even if you're not a PTA member. We'd love to have everyone involved! There are, however, a few positions that are restricted to PTA Members; these include handling money, committee chairs, and executive board member positions.

Can anyone come to a PTA meeting?

Yes! We encourage all parents, guardians, family members, and community members to come to meetings. We discuss PTA events and the Principal Springer provides a school update. You can learn a lot at a PTA meeting! Kids are always welcome to come to meetings! For more information on our General Meetings, CLICK HERE! 

If I attend a PTA meeting, will I automatically get "volunteered" to do something?

No! We promise we will not assign you a job, but you might want one after you hear the exciting things that we’re doing and how much of an impact you can make on the school. We also want to hear voices from all grades, new and old families…everyone!

Why do I have to renew my PTA membership every year?

Your PTA membership dues are required by NMPTA and National PTA. During the 2024-2025 school year we are offering to waive the $6.00 membership dues. If you would like to have your dues waived fill out the PTA Membership form that is located in the Front Office and return it completed to the PTA box in the Office. Can I give my child's teacher a gift for the holidays?

Sure! Teachers love gifts, but, know that NO Alvarado teacher expects a gift! If you are interested in purchasing something check out Staff's Favorite Things  for the teacher or staff member you wish to buy for.

My son/daughter came home from school without her jacket. Where is the Lost and Found? 

The Lost and Found is located right outside the Front Office gates by the entrance to the Library, and it is usually overflowing! There are sweaters, jackets, books, lunch boxes and more, so if your child is missing something, you should absolutely check it out! Unclaimed items are periodically donated throughout the year, but notice will be sent out before items are donated.
