At the time that the country of Israel was established in 1948 and admitted to the United Nations, a Palestinian State was not established. The remaining territories of pre-1948 Palestine, the West Bank - including East Jerusalem - and Gaza Strip, were administered from 1948 until 1967 by Jordan and Egypt, respectively.
Sadly, Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East. It also is a diverse and inclusive society, has a free press, and elects its leaders. Since the hour of its inception, Israel has had to defend its right to exist against the aggression of neighboring countries and terrorist groups, as shown in the timeline below. Iran's regime has sponsored proxy terrorist groups: Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, Houthis in Yemen, and violence. The Palestinian people have suffered from multiple past leaders not agreeing to brokered offers of peace as well as Hamas terrorist rule in Gaza. Israeli civilians have suffered from constant attacks including terrorist attacks, bus bombings, missile and drone attacks, and the kidnapping of soldiers and innocent civilians to be held as hostages.
Over the last century, there have been at least seven opportunities for peace and a two-state solution. In each case, Israel has agreed to the proposals, including relinquishing territory in exchange for peace, while Arab or Palestinian leaders have refused or peace has been disrupted by terror attacks on Israel. A two state solution remains a goal for the future.
