One of the Wayland-Yutani Corps' main products is Synthetics. The technology was created in the latter half of the 21st century. The early synthesizers were used in security work. In the movie, the Synths are much more advanced. David is from the David 8 line, a general-purpose synth made by the Wayland-Yutani Corp. Walter is a new model of the David 8. Another model of synths made by a competitor to the Wayland-Yutani Corp is the working Joes. These androids lack the emotions of the David androids and are used for manual labor. Other applications of these synths are sex work and combat. 

The primary ships used by the Wayland-Yanti Corp for colonization are the Model CY78.3 Affiance. Each of these ship are equipped with the MU/TH/UR 6000 mainframe AI. The program manages. The ship's background systems autopiloted the vessel while the crew were in hypersleep.
