As a young boy in Alden, Randy made his first football to play with. He took a sack, possibly a feed bag and stuffed it with socks and sewed it up so he could play football. As he got older his best workouts came in the cornfields as he would hit the stalks and spin off them. Randy did not have great speed, but there was nobody quicker within ten yards! After football practice in HS he was seen ramming into the goal posts and spinning off. One of the keys to his game was that he was so low. This is probably why he always fell forward gaining those extra yards. One of his other gifts was understanding the game. His son Ryan tells us that when they would watch pro football, his dad would be able to tell what they were going to do before every play. Quickness was preached to his sons as they grew up and were involved in sports. As a senior at Alden High School, Randy Schultz was 1st Team All-Conference in Football, Basketball, Track and Baseball. In 1960 he lead all running backs in Iowa with 27 touchdowns. In 1961, Randy and his dad worked at a trampoline factory in Jefferson Iowa for the summer. They talked about staying there and playing football, but Randy returned to Alden in 1961 for his senior season. In his High School football career, he never missed a game, although he was pulled at halftime because of the enormous leads Alden had built, making his totals smaller than if he had played more full games.

After Randy's senior season, he had several offers to play college football. He visited Iowa State University, but they didn't have much interest in him (They thought he was too slow). The University of Iowa offered him a full ride scholarship, but he didn't think he would fit into their offense very well and it was farther from home and larger than he wanted. An assistant coach at the State College of Iowa offered him a $250.00 scholarship, before he was admitted to the school. Randy was below the top half of his class, which was a requirement for receiving aid. The registrar decided to honor the commitment and give him one semester of aid to prove he could do the work and of course he did. (Article: "Handy Randy Got In SCI on Error" While at the State College of Iowa, Randy Schultz never missed a game despite being a marked man. Randy took a fierce beating as every defense was designed to stop him.
The Collision: In one of his games at SCI, Randy knew the scout from the Minnesota Vikings was at the game and he wanted to make a good impression. Randy never went backwards- he always fell forward, but on this particular play, the defender was coming from the blind side and they collided with neither one giving an inch. It was a devastating hit. It was helmet to helmet and the opposing players face mask split in two. Randy normally got up slowly from big hits, but this time, with the scout on the sidelines he wanted to impress him so he popped up right away and jogged/stumbled back to the huddle. The Vikings scout was seen running up the sidelines yelling "That Schultz is one tough son of a bitch" over and over. Schultz didn't believe in celebrating after a touchdown, he felt there was always more work to be done.

The 1965 season was a difficult one. Not only was Randy a marked man after being named 1st team All-American in 1964, SCI was devastated by injuries with the early loss of over 10 starters. In several games, Randy was playing both ways as he made appearances in the secondary. It says a lot about a running back that has more yards rushing than the team has total offense in a game!
