Where to sail your catamaran in Alberta
Where to sail your catamaran in Alberta
Although just about any body of water may be useable, some lakes are more accessible and may offer more convenience than others. Over time, information will be added to help you chose where to sail. Sailing clubs might be a consideration, if they offer secure storage where you can leave your boat in a semi-setup state and have an easy to use launch ramp and a beach close by to park before setting out. Look for continuing improvements to this page as more information is gathered. This will never be a fully comprehensive information page but if you are willing to contribute information about lakes in your area this website will become a beneficial help. If you are leaving your boat overnight with the mast up be sure to take the sails down and park it out of the weather. If the mast is up your boat is vulnerable to wind storms and could possibly be blown over or pushed off the beach. Consider tying the boat down to the ground or if the mast can be dropped easily do that.
Lake Newell Access is at Kinbrook Island Provincial Park and Lake Newell Resort Marina. Join Newell Sailing Club at Kinbrook Park to keep your catamaran semi ready or rent a spot at the Resort marina to keep your boat semi ready. Dry stall storage costs at the marina include your launch fee. Weekends at Kinbrook can be busy so get there early in the morning if you plan on setting up and getting a parking spot on the boat beach. Boats stored with the mast up have to be tied down. If left on the trailer be sure to chock the wheels as well as tie downs to the ground. No fee for launching at Kinbrook boat launch area.

Sir Winston Churchill park has some access for launching other than the official boat launch on the causeway. Seasprays and a launching dolly would make this a desirable place to sail if you are there during the summer. The lake is very big and has some shallow spots. One spot on the SW side had a parking area and a mat that make dollying a boat to the shore area fairly easy.
Long Lake Provincial Park
Not a lot of room next to the boat launch but enough if you need to park on the beach. If you dolly your boat then lots of room in the parking lot. There were a couple of boat launches in this park.
