Onboarding
Before you start the Apprenticeship you will have a first meeting with your Work-based Coach (WBC), which is called the 'onboarding' process.
There is some guidance here about the onboarding process https://blog.shu.ac.uk/apprenticeship-resources/onboarding/on-boarding-guidance-for-apprentices-and-employers/
Skills Scan
During onboarding your will be asked to complete a skills scan via a link to an online system called MAYTAS. https://blog.shu.ac.uk/apprenticeship-resources/onboarding/starting-point-and-skills-scan/
This skills scan is designed to allow you to rate yourself against professional knowledge, skills and behaviours (KSBs) you currently have. You will need to bear in mind that you are rating yourself against the standards for a qualified professional, not your performance within your current role. Therefore you need to ensure that you allow yourself scope to develop in all areas.
Starting Point Exercise
Once you have completed the skills scan you will then be instructed to complete 2 (mandatory) preparatory activities to aid your transition to Higher Education. This involves reflecting on your current areas of strengths and areas you need to develop and then constructing an action plan of how to work towards achieving these goals. These activities will help to focus your progression through the apprenticeship and will be discussed and shared in a Personal and Professional Development module at the start of your course.

Mandatory Preparatory Activity 1 – Apprenticeship Starting Point – Review your Skill Scan and complete the table as far as possible so you are ready to individualise your journey at the start of teaching and learning.
• Mandatory Preparatory Activity 2 – Transition to Higher Education – kickstart your critical reflective skills to help build your Apprenticeship Training Plan. This 5 step exercise will get you started.
Induction
Before you start the apprenticeship you will be invited to a SHU Apprenticeship Welcome Event. This will be a change to find out more information about apprenticeships, including role and responsibilities of you as an apprentice, your employer and SHU. You will also be informed about the role of the work-based mentor, and work based coach and what constitutes on and off-the-job-learning
Then at the start your apprenticeship, the first one to two days will involve some course specific induction activities. This induction may take place on campus or online. At induction you will have a chance to meet other learners and out more information about:
Course teams and contacts
Course curriculum and module content
Integrated care curriculum
Assessment guidelines and regulations
Student and academic support
Library support
Professional body requirements and support
IT systems and support
Placements (if applicable to your course)
You will receive emails asking you to complete some tasks such as enrolling- here is a checklist to help you know what to expect and what to complete
If you have some face-to-face sessions on campus at SHU, then you can have a look at the facilities here and familiarise yourself with the campus. We provide the majority of our teaching at the Collegiate Crescent Campus (Sheffield) in many of the different buildings and facilities. We use a variety of different teaching methods and approaches and utilise a range of specialist equipment on site.
Please bear in mind that parking can be difficult, as there are limited parking spaces on the roads around Collegiate Campus. It is pay and display (can pay by phone app) and most spaces have a 3/4 hour max limit- after such time, you must leave the space and park elsewhere. Parking fines are commonly issued. Collegiate Crescent can be reached by bus or walking from Sheffield train station (approx 20 min walk).
Here is a video that shows you around the SHU Collegiate Campus Site, so you can see what to expect.
